Sedation Dentistry
including Nitrous Oxide Relaxation Gas
Fearful of the dentist? Anxious or nervous? You’re not alone. Nearly half of all Americans experience dental anxiety during every appointment. At Dr. Chelsea Mason Dental, we know that not everybody finds a visit to the dentist’s chair fun. That’s why we offer two sedation options for our patients.
Nitrous Oxide Relaxation Gas
Many patients choose nitrous oxide, also commonly called “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective way to reduce anxiety during a dental procedure. It does not numb the teeth, so anesthetic still will be used. It does produce a pleasant, calming effect which people describe as “happy,” “unconcerned,” and “disconnected” from what is happening. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask that covers the nose. It takes just a few minutes to take effect, and the effects wear off soon after the mask is removed. It is not necessary to have another person drive you to and from your appointment.
Nitrous Oxide Relaxation Gas is recommended in cases of:
- Anxiety
- Difficulty getting numb
- Strong gag response
- Extreme sensitivity of teeth
- Significant amount of dental work in one appointment
Oral Conscious Sedation
Some people require oral conscious sedation, which involves the administration of oral sedative medication. If you choose this option, you are required to have another person drive you to and from your appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation is recommended in cases of:
- Severe Anxiety
- Difficulty getting numb
- Strong gag response
- Extreme sensitivity of teeth
- Significant amount of dental work in one appointment
