A chipped tooth might seem like a minor issue, especially if it doesn’t hurt right away. But here in Bay City, MI, Dr. Chelsea Mason sees patients every week who waited too long to treat a chip—and ended up needing more extensive work as a result. Whether your tooth was damaged biting into something hard, during a pickup game at Veterans Memorial Park, or from a fall on an icy sidewalk, getting it repaired quickly can save you time, money, and discomfort down the road.
Ignoring a chipped tooth and failing to get it fixed can lead to increased chances of more substantial damage that could compromise the entire tooth.

Your Smile’s Appearance

Even a small chip on a front tooth can change the way your smile looks. Chips create uneven edges, shadows, and rough spots that draw attention for the wrong reasons. If the chip is on a visible tooth, you may find yourself smiling with your mouth closed or avoiding photos altogether. At our Bay City dental office, Dr. Mason offers several options for repairing chipped teeth depending on the size and location of the damage. Dental bonding works well for minor chips and can often be completed in a single visit. For larger chips, porcelain veneers or crowns provide a longer-lasting solution. A 2024 systematic review published in the Journal of Dentistry found that modern porcelain veneers have survival rates above 90% at the 10-year mark, making them a reliable long-term option.

It Can Cause Sensitivity

When a tooth chips, it can expose the dentin layer underneath your enamel. Dentin contains tiny tubes that lead directly to the nerve of your tooth, which is why a chipped tooth often becomes sensitive to hot coffee, cold water, or even the winter air here in Michigan. If the chip is deep enough to reach the pulp, you could develop a serious infection that requires a root canal. Dr. Mason recommends coming in as soon as possible after chipping a tooth so we can assess the damage and protect the exposed area before sensitivity worsens.
For small chips, dental bonding is often the fastest and most affordable repair. Dr. Mason applies a tooth-colored composite resin directly to the damaged area, sculpts it to match your natural tooth shape, and hardens it with a curing light. The entire process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes per tooth and can be completed in a single visit at our Bay City office.
When a chip affects the front surface of a visible tooth, a porcelain veneer can provide a seamless, long-lasting restoration. Veneers are thin shells custom-made to fit over the front of your tooth, hiding the damage while creating a natural-looking result. With proper care, veneers can last 10 to 15 years or more.
For larger chips or teeth that have been significantly weakened, a dental crown covers and protects the entire visible portion of the tooth. Crowns restore both the strength and appearance of a damaged tooth. Dr. Mason offers several crown materials, including porcelain and zirconia, to match your natural teeth.

Risk of Decay and Infection

A chipped tooth creates rough edges and crevices where bacteria can collect. These spots are harder to clean with regular brushing and flossing, which means plaque builds up faster in the damaged area. Over time, this can lead to tooth decay or even a dental abscess. The American Dental Association notes that compromised tooth structure is significantly more vulnerable to decay than intact enamel. The sooner you repair a chip, the less chance bacteria have to cause additional problems.

Don’t Wait—Protect Your Oral Health

What starts as a small chip can turn into a cracked tooth if left untreated. Chewing puts constant pressure on your teeth, and a weakened spot will only get worse over time. A crack that extends below the gumline may mean the tooth can’t be saved at all. If you’ve chipped a tooth, Dr. Chelsea Mason and our team in Bay City are here to help. We serve patients from across the Great Lakes Bay Region, including Essexville, Midland, Saginaw, and Auburn. Contact our office to schedule an evaluation—most chips can be repaired in just one or two visits.
